SEDGEFIELD | GARDEN ROUTE | SOUTH AFRICA
Arte Architects | Sedgefield Architects - Garden Route

This contemporary coastal home is positioned near a river in Sedgefield, along The Garden Route, an area previously affected by floods that caused significant damage to an old family residence. In response, the clients, a young family, opted to demolish the existing structure and embark on a complete rebuild.

Their primary directive was to establish an elevated platform for the new home, strategically positioned to mitigate potential flood risks while maximizing the tranquil river views.

Central to the design is a spacious kitchen, situated at the heart of the home, connecting to the entertainment patios overlooking the river. The kitchen also opens onto a private courtyard featuring a wood-burning fire pit, creating a cozy atmosphere for outdoor social gatherings.

All bedrooms are purposely located on the upper level, deliberately separated from the communal areas frequented by guests and friends. This layout ensures privacy and moments of quiet for the family retreat while offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding natural beauty.

The exterior aesthetic is defined by bold horizontal lines and large cantilevered concrete elements. The concrete flat roof further amplifies the sleek profile of the house, but also serves as a functional space, concealing services discreetly and ensuring a clean and unobtrusive visual profile from all angles.
